Continuity is a memory problem, and this is where the memory lives. Which hand held the glass, which way she was facing, how far the cigarette had burned down, what has to be reset before the next take — all of it, beat by beat, because you will shoot the reverse three hours later and nobody else will remember.
The screen direction and eyeline column is the one that saves scenes. Get it wrong and two shots refuse to cut together no matter what the editor tries. Script day matters too — it's what tells you which wardrobe and which state of everything belongs in the frame.
