StudioBinder is a cloud platform built for teams. It runs in a browser on any operating system, several people can work in the same project at once, and it can send call sheets out and track who confirmed. That collaboration layer is the product, and it is genuinely good at it.
Scriptease is a desktop application built for the person doing the work. It runs on your Mac, the project is a file on your disk, and it does not need a connection to open. You buy it once. There is no seat count, no renewal and no per-project fee.
If your production lives and dies by a shared cloud workspace with five people editing at once, buy StudioBinder. Nothing on this page will change that, and we would rather tell you now than take your money and issue a refund in a week.
Where StudioBinder is the better choice
Four cases where we would not recommend switching:
- You are not on a Mac. Scriptease is macOS only. StudioBinder runs in a browser, so Windows, Linux and Chromebook are all fine. This one is not close.
- You need real-time collaboration. Several people in the same breakdown at the same time is what a cloud platform is for. Scriptease is single-user by design.
- You send call sheets and need delivery tracking. Scriptease generates the call sheet as a PDF. It does not email it for you or tell you who opened it.
- You want someone else responsible for your backups. Your Scriptease project is a file you own, which also means backing it up is your job.

A subscription is not expensive in any single month. It is expensive across the life of a career, and it is expensive in a way that is easy not to notice — which is exactly why it is worth doing the arithmetic once, deliberately.

StudioBinder publishes several tiers and discounts annual billing — check their pricing page for current figures. The rows above are round numbers so you can find yours; the point is the shape of the curve, not any one plan.
There is a second cost that does not appear on either invoice. When a subscription lapses, the work usually stops being reachable. A project you shot four years ago, on a plan you cancelled two years ago, is not a file you can open — it is an account you have to reactivate. With Scriptease the project is a file sitting in a folder on your own disk. In ten years, whatever we are doing as a company, that file is still yours.

One project file, not five tools stitched together
In Scriptease the script is the source. Tag an element in the scene and it appears in the breakdown. The breakdown feeds the stripboard. The stripboard feeds the call sheet. The budget reads from the same project. Change a scene and the change propagates — you are not re-entering the same information in a fourth place and hoping the three earlier copies were the ones that were wrong.

On a project under NDA, "where does the script live" is not a preference, it is a term of the contract. An offline app answers that question in one sentence: the script is on this machine and it has never been anywhere else. Frequently asked questions
Can I import my existing scripts?
Yes. Scriptease reads Fountain and FDX, so a script written elsewhere comes across with its formatting intact.
What happens when the 14-day trial ends?
The app switches to read-only. Your project files stay on your disk and stay openable — you do not lose access to your own work because a trial expired. Buy a licence and it unlocks where you left off.
Is $99.99 really the whole cost?
Yes. One purchase, updates included, two machine activations. No seat fee, no per-project charge, no renewal.
Is there a Windows version?
Not currently. Scriptease is a macOS application. If you are on Windows, StudioBinder is the more practical choice today.
Do I need to be online to use it?
Only once, to start the trial or activate the licence. After that the app runs fully offline — which is the point on a location with no signal.
