The midpoint is the turning point that saves your second act from sagging. Learn how false victories and false defeats raise the stakes and drive the story forward.
The saggy middle is the most common structural failure in screenwriting — and the midpoint is its cure. Around page 50–55, something has to turn: a revelation, a reversal, a raising of stakes that flips the hero from reacting to driving. Get the midpoint right and your second act pulls the audience forward instead of losing them. Here's how.
What the midpoint does
The midpoint is the film's central pivot. It:
- Raises the stakes — the cost of failure jumps.
- Shifts direction — new information or events change the game.
- Changes the hero — from reactive (things happening to them) to active (them driving the story).
Before the midpoint, the hero mostly responds. After it, they take the wheel.
The two classic forms
False victory
The hero seems to win — and then it curdles. They get the thing, but it's hollow, or it triggers a worse problem.
Example: the team pulls off the heist at the midpoint — then discovers they've been set up.
A false victory gives a satisfying high before the second-half squeeze.
False defeat
The hero seems to lose — and finds new resolve in the wreckage.
Example: the plan collapses at midpoint, but the hero learns the truth that lets them fight smarter.
Both share the same function: a strong turn that recharges the story.
Where it fits
In the Blake Snyder beats the Midpoint sits around page 55, between "Fun and Games" and "Bad Guys Close In." In the 9-block structure it's the hinge of Block 5. Wherever your framework, it belongs at the center — and if your midpoint lands at page 75, your first half is bloated.
How to write a strong one
- Make it a genuine turn, not just another event. The story's direction should measurably change.
- Raise the stakes. After the midpoint, failure should cost more.
- Reveal something. New information reframes what the hero (and audience) understand.
- Flip the hero to active. This is where they stop reacting.
- Tie it to theme. The best midpoints deepen the film's central question, not just the plot.
