French New Wave: How Godard and Truffaut Revolutionized Editing

In the late 1950s, a group of young French critics decided the best way to prove their theories about cinema was to pick up cameras and break every rule themselves. The result — the French New Wave — changed film language permanently. Here's what they did and why it still matters.
What it was
The French New Wave (Nouvelle Vague) was a movement of the late 1950s–60s, led by critics-turned-directors from the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma — most famously Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. They rejected the polished, studio-bound conventions of classical cinema in favor of something personal, spontaneous, and free.
The techniques
- Jump cuts. The signature move — deliberately discontinuous edits within a scene, breaking the classical rule of invisible continuity. Godard's Breathless made the jump cut a statement.
- Location shooting. Real streets, real apartments, real light — out of the studio and into the world.
- Natural light and handheld cameras. Lightweight, mobile, immediate — enabled by new portable equipment.
- Improvisation. Loose scripts and spontaneous performance over rigid planning.
- Breaking the fourth wall. Characters addressing the camera; films aware they're films.
- Referential, self-conscious style. Movies about movies, full of homage and commentary.
Why it was revolutionary
The New Wave attacked the idea that films had to be seamless and invisible. By making the technique visible — a jarring cut, a glance at the lens — they insisted cinema was an art with an author, not an anonymous industrial product. This fed directly into auteur theory, the idea that the director is the true author of a film.
It also democratized filmmaking: shooting on location with small crews and natural light proved you didn't need a studio's resources to make something vital — a lesson that echoes through mumblecore and indie film today.
The lasting influence
New Wave techniques stopped being radical and became part of the standard vocabulary. The jump cut is now everywhere from music videos to vlogs; location shooting and handheld immediacy are default indie tools; self-aware, referential storytelling is mainstream. Every filmmaker who's broken a rule on purpose owes something to Godard and Truffaut.
